Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman grew up in Chernovitz, Romania, and came to the US in 1951. She has lived in the Bronx since then. In 2005 she was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship by the NEA in Washington. The first time a Yiddish poet and composer was so honored.
