“Mes Sefaradí”, at the Cultural Center of Spain, in Montevideo
“For the first time in Uruguay, the Sephardic people are received by the Cultural Center of Spain as members of their network of Spanish communities residing in our country. This recognition offers the opportunity to show its rich cultural heritage, always inextricably linked to the Iberian Peninsula since time immemorial.
This event will take place throughout the month of August. It will consist of several meetings that will give an account of the different expressions of culture that are typical of those Uruguayan descendants of the immigrants of that time, who arrived in our country at the beginning of the last century.
Coming mainly from Turkey, Greece, the Balkans and North Africa, they brought in their trunks, a baggage of traditions; mixture of their Iberian origin and the customs they adopted in the countries where they lived for more than 400 years.
This emblematic building in Ciudad Vieja, where Spain now has its cultural headquarters in Montevideo, opens its doors for the Sephardics to share knowledge, sounds, flavors, experiences and traditions, treasured by their families.
The unique inheritance of its Spanish roots, in which they curtailed their cultural wealth in all areas of knowledge: the arts and even gastronomy, among others, are summoned to this instance, to share with the other Spanish communities a common past that today is reunited
It is a true celebration, that an event of this nature takes place in our country, of which all are enriched.
The invitation to participate in the activities that will be every evening on Wednesday of August, and Sunday, September 1 at 11 in the morning (see agenda below)
Thank you very much for joining us. ”
