Theodore Bikel sings Yiddishe Song Shabes Shabes

How one treats an heirloom is a measure of one’s character. You can squander or pawn an heirloom, or you can honor and cherish it.
Looking around this world I observe so many who have carelessly given up the golden goblet of tradition in exchange for the plastic cup of assimilation. And in the rush to conform to the mainstream culture people sacrifice so many rich and wonderful traditions. I am, as my audiences surely know, a thoroughly modern man and a universalist. I speak five languages and sing in a dozen more.
I honor other people’s cultures, and my curiosity drives me to cultivate their songs. But the Jewish song is my own. ”
— Theodore Bikel
