Born in Krakow, Poland, Taube and his father survived the Holocaust in the employ of German industrialist Oskar Schindler. The cantor has called his survival “divine destiny,” which he fulfilled by dedicating his voice to God.
A prolific composer whose works have been performed all over the world, Taube has made two other recordings, both LPs of his original works.
The cantor isn’t the only pillar of the Pittsburgh Jewish community to receive recent honors. Rabbi Walter Jacob, rabbi emeritus of Rodef Shalom Congregation in Shadyside, now has his portrait on a first-class postage stamp issued by the Austrian National Postal Authority. The stamp is in tribute to “Rabbis for Europe” and honors Jacob’s work as founder and president of the Abraham Geiger College, a liberal rabbinical seminary in Pottsdam, Germany.
Moshe Taube, was the cantor at Congregation Beth Shalom in Squirrel Hill for 40 years retiring in December 2004.
