Henry Gerro  Biography

Henry Gerro is the author and performer of his own songs, violinist, singer and actor. He was born on August 31, 1919 in Rivne (Russia, Volyn province, now Ukraine).

In childhood he played the clarinet and violin. It is possible that he graduated from the music school in Rivne in the violin class. Later he studied medicine in Geneva. There he also decided to become an actor. It is likely that in the period from 1939 to 1941 he studied the basics of dramatic art in Kiev.

During the Great Patriotic War, with the repertoire of Russian and Jewish songs, he sang as a member of front-line brigades.

After the war, Gerro asked for political asylum in France. In 1947-1951 he performed and recorded with the orchestras of Henryk Gold, Bernard Potok, and others.

After concluding a two-year contract with the Buenos Aires International Music Hall, he moved to Argentina.

Since 1953 he appeared along with Rosita Londner in her own shows, operettas and musicals: Haloomes Fung Glick (1953); “A nakht in Rio” (1956); “A milioner oif tsures” (1958); “Berke the Millionaire” (1960); “Schwer zu zain za a kaptsn” (1963); “Der Farlibter Nar” (1966); “Oy from the Dus and Veltele” (1970); “Freileh in shtetl” (1973); “Zola Zain Sinh Bai Idn” (1974); “Duvidle Klezmer” (1976); “S’hot und gut getrofn” (1976), etc.

Gerro has toured to England, France, Belgium, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Israel, USA, Brazil, Mexico and other Latin American countries. In total, he recorded twenty-five long-playing records and cassettes.

He was dedicated to special programs on television in Sweden, England and Brazil. In 1972 he was awarded the Medal of the Ministry of Defense of Israel.

Henry Gerro died October 17, 1980 in Buenos Aires (Argentina).
