Gustavo Sánchez Galarraga  Biography

Poet, dramatist and Cuban musical lyricist, born in Havana in 1893 and died in his hometown in 1934. Considered one of the most prominent figures of Cuban popular literature of the first third of the twentieth century, his work reached a large number of readers and listeners thanks to the ability of Sánchez Galarraga to capture the essence of the traditions and ways of life of his compatriots, and express them in a literary language of great simplicity and expressive efficacy.

In his capacity as a writer, he successfully cultivated poetic creation, a genre in which, in life, he was among the first lyric voices of the Caribbean island, thanks to a work of extraordinary musical delicacy that is also characterized by its frequent -but well dosed- concessions to sentimentality. Among the most outstanding poetic titles of the literary production of the writer of Havana, it is worth remembering The Morning Fountain, The Sound Boat, Songbook of Life and Blue Smoke.

Apart from this prolific poetic activity, Gustavo Sánchez Galarraga also successfully cultivated the theatrical genre, and premiered several pieces in Havana that gave him a great literary recognition in his time. Some of his best known dramatic works are entitled The hero, Carmen, The world of dolls and The truth of life. In addition, the famous Cuban writer greatly increased his popularity as a result of the close collaboration he had with the great Cuban pianist and musical composer Ernesto Lecuona, for whom he composed the lyrics of many songs.

The article says Sheb recorded his last song just 4 days before he died, but does not tell us the name of it. I be curious what it was. I’d like to hear it.
