Chaim Fershko  Biography

Chaim Fershko is a pianist and composer. He was born on October 15, 1897 in Lutsk (Volyn province, Russian Empire, now Ukraine). The elder brother of famous musicians Shmuel (Stanislav) and Michal Fershko.

Played the piano in Lutsk and Warsaw. Until 1939 he performed with Polish orchestras as a soloist with a repertoire of works by Sergei Rachmaninov, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin, and others.

At the beginning of the Second World War, his wife, an opera singer, and their five-year-old daughter were killed, and he himself was amputated with his left hand. In 1941, he was in Soviet territory, where he met a singer and violinist Sarah Shpitsman from Lodz, who soon became his wife. By coincidence, she was also born in Lutsk and her left arm was also amputated.

After 1945, Farshko lived and toured in Israel, where Chaim Fershko wrote his first songs, and in France, where Chaim Fershko wrote music for the 1950 documentary “Der tug of Hecumene / And the Day came.”

In 1954, the Fershko family emigrated to the United States, where they immediately recorded two long-playing records. The pair toured much in the US, Canada and Mexico. In 1959, Sarah and Chaim Fershko were invited to the Ed Sullivan show (The Ed Sullivan Show).

Until 1977 they lived in New York, later moved to Miami Beach, where their joint performances became traditional.

Chaim Fershko died on January 12, 1985 in Miami Beach, USA.

The article says Sheb recorded his last song just 4 days before he died, but does not tell us the name of it. I be curious what it was. I’d like to hear it.
