Shik mir a shtral Yiddish Tango from Ukraine – Jerusalem T Project
Lyrics: Herts Rivkin, music: unknown Vocal: Olga Avigail Mieleszczuk, violin: Aliza Keren, piano: Evgeny Kosovsky, accordion: Artem Nizhnik, bass: Alex Trepakov, guitar: Alex Belousov The words of this old Yiddish tango from the repertoire of Ukrainian folksinger Arkady Gendler, has became very relevant today: Send me a ray to light my path, Drive away the wind that howls in my face Send the sun to dry my tears That has flown silently for years & can’t stop… Its was performed by me and a band consisting of Israeli musicians, some of whom come from Ukraine and some from Russia. Such cooperation today is probably possible only in Jerusalem. The pianist Evgeny Kosovsky, who escaped with his family from the war from Odessa, translated the last refrain into Ukrainian.
