Partisan song in Yiddish
Me giving a longwinded introduction to and singing Hirsh Gliks Partisan Song (Shtil di nakht) in Yiddish (subtitles coming soon). I heard this song a lot as a child sung in both Yiddish and Hungarian and it has always been special to me. Im not a particularly good singer but because there was no version of the song on Youtube in the original Yiddish I felt that my rendition would be better than no version at all. So if you have a better version (or could make one), please put it up.
This song is at its core a love song that takes place, instead of in a normal environment, on a battlefield, during a guerrilla attack. Instead of the shy teenager admiring a girl at school, he admires her as she attacks a Nazi caravan. It was written in the Vilna Ghetto, where the partisan and Yiddish poet Hirsh Glik (1920-1942) was forced to live along with the rest of Vilnas Jews during the Nazi occupation.
Gliks more famous song, also known in English as the partisan song became the anthem of the Jewish partisan brigades and is sung to this day as an nofficial anthem of Holocaust.
