Platon Grigorievich Brunov – composer, pianist, conductor. Born May 10, 1859 in Elisavetgrad (Kherson Province, Russian Empire, now Kirovograd, Ukraine).
He graduated from the Warsaw and Imperial St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied according to the classes of A.G. Rubinshtein and N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov.
In 1891 he emigrated to the United States. Since 1894 he lived in New York. He conducted various symphony orchestras, male choirs, performed in concerts as a pianist, gave lectures on the history of music.
He was the author of a number of vocal and instrumental works on American, Russian and Jewish themes, including the symphonies “Shivat Zion” and the opera “Palestine”. In 1911, the New York publishing house of Charles Harris (Charles K. Harris) published his collection “Jewish Folk Songs” for voice and piano.
For many years he was the musical director of the singing department of Poalei Zion.
Platon Brunov passed away on July 11, 1924.
