Nurit Hirsh  Biography

Nurit Hirsh is a graduate of the music academy in Tel-Aviv, Israel, majoring in piano. She also studied composition with Mordechai Seter, orchestration with Noam Sheriff, conducting with Laslo Rott.

She played chamber music inEden Partosh’s class and studied clarinet with Yaacov Barnea of the Israeliphilharmonic Orchestra.

Ms. Hirsh composed more than a thousand songs, among them: “Bashana Haba’ah” and “Osse Shalom” which was composed to the words from the Kaddish prayer. This song has become an integral part of Jewish services around the world.

Nurit Hirsh represented the State of Israel in a number of international song festivals as a composer, arranger and conductor. She won prizes in Greece, Brazil, Chile, Japan, Portugal, Malta, Ireland and Yugoslavia.

In 1973, her song “Ei Sham” won fourth place in the Eurovision song contest in Luxemburg. She orchestrated the song and conducted the orchestra. The Eurovusion contest is the most prestigious musical event in Europe. Over 700 million people watch it on television every year. Some of the world’s leading artists have participated in the event over the years, Including Celine Dion, Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton John, and the pop group ABBA.

In the 1978 Eurovision, Nurit represented Israel with her song “A-Ba-Ni-Bi” and won first prize. It is noteworthy that Ms.Hirsh also orchestrated the song and conducted the orchestra.

Nurit Hirsh wrote the film scores to fourteen motion pictures, among them: Lupo, Katz and Karasso, Behind Walls and the 1972 Academy Award nominee as best foreign picture “The Policeman” by Ephraim Kishon.

For three years she conducted the musical “Sallah Shabati” (composed and conducted by her) in the national theatre “Habima”.

She also composed music for theatre and television.

Her songs were published in a series of four books which include music and lyrics.

In addition to composing Nurit Hirsh devotes much of her time to concerts in Israel and abroad.

In February 2000, a special tribute concert celebrating her songs was held at the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. Nurit hosted the evening and played the piano with the orchestra, joined by a crowd of 3000 people singing along.

In July 2000, Ms. Hirsh performed in concerts in Buenos Aires along with her daughter, opera singer Ruth Rosenfeld.

In September that same year, Nurit and her daughter performed in Kazakhstan and Kirghistan on a tour sponsored by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign affairs.

In November 2003, Nurit went on a tour of the United States, performing for Jewish Congregations across the nation.

In October 2004, Ms. Hirsh visited the death camp sites in Poland and performed in Krakow for an audience of a thousand Israeli students and their teachers.

In December 2004, Nurit performed with lyricist Ehud Manor in a concert for “EMUNA”. The performance was such a success that the duo was asked to perform for the Israeli Knesset.

In July 2005, Nurit hosted another concert of her songs at the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv in front of a full house.

In November 2005, Nurit toured South America where she performed in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
